Study material dispatch

IGNOU Book Status: How to Track Your Study Material Dispatch

After admission or re-registration, IGNOU posts printed course books to your address. The university publishes a separate dispatch-status page for each session, and all it asks for is your enrolment number. This guide lists the official link for every session, explains which one to use, and tells you exactly whom to contact if your books do not arrive.

What “book status” means at IGNOU

IGNOU’s printed course books are called Self Learning Material (SLM). They are printed and posted by the university’s Material Production and Distribution Division (MPDD) in New Delhi. On IGNOU’s website, MPDD describes its job as printing, storing and dispatching study material to individual learners course-wise and medium-wise, and to regional and study centres, through the postal system.

“Book status” or “study material status” is simply the dispatch record MPDD keeps against your enrolment number for a particular session.

Before you check

Books are only sent once your admission or re-registration has gone through. If you have just applied, first confirm that your registration is complete on IGNOU’s registration status page (linked at the end of this guide). Keep these ready:

  • Your enrolment number, from your admission confirmation or ID card
  • The session you are expecting books for (January or July, and the year)
  • The postal address you gave at admission, so you can spot a wrong address quickly

How to check your book status, step by step

  1. Open the official pageGo to ignou.ac.in, open Student Services, then Know Your Status. Under “Study Material Status”, click your session. You can also use the session links in the table above.
  2. Enter your enrolment numberThe form has a single mandatory field, “Enrollment No.”. Type it exactly as printed, without spaces.
  3. Click SubmitThe page shows the dispatch details recorded against your enrolment number for that session.
  4. Note the detailsTake a screenshot. If you later need to contact MPDD or raise a grievance, these details save time.
TipIf the page shows nothing for your enrolment number, open the link for the other recent session before assuming there is a problem. Students often check the session they applied in rather than the one their books were issued for.

Which session link should you use?

Use the session of the admission or re-registration the books belong to.

New admissionUse the session you were admitted in. A student admitted in the July 2026 cycle checks the July 2026 page.
Re-registrationUse the session you re-registered for, since books for the next semester or year are tied to that cycle.
Changed course or mediumCheck your admission session and also the session in which the change was made.
Not sureCheck the two most recent sessions. It takes less than a minute and avoids an unnecessary complaint.

Books not received: what to do

Follow these in order. Each step gives the next office the information it needs.

  1. Re-check your addressCompare the address on your admission form with where you live now. A wrong pin code or missing house number is one of the most common reasons parcels come back.
  2. Contact MPDD directlyMPDD runs a student support cell for non-receipt of study material. Call 011-29572008 or 011-29572012, or email mpdd@ignou.ac.in with your enrolment number, programme code, session and the courses that are missing.
  3. Visit the single window (if you are in Delhi)MPDD says it has set up a single window at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, for students who come in person about non-receipt of study material.
  4. Raise a grievance on iGRAMIf there is no resolution, register a complaint on IGNOU’s grievance portal, igram.ignou.ac.in, and keep the grievance number.
  5. Inform your regional centreYour regional centre can also follow up, especially if books were sent to the centre rather than to your address.
Write a complete email“Books not received” on its own usually gets a reply asking for details. Include your name, enrolment number, programme, session, medium, missing course codes, full postal address with pin code and a screenshot of the status page.

Why dispatch gets delayed

MPDD itself points out that dispatching books course-wise and medium-wise to a very large number of learners is a complex operation, made harder because many students change their address, medium of instruction or courses. Delays typically trace back to one of these:

  • an address change made after the dispatch was generated
  • a change of medium (for example, English to Hindi) after admission
  • a course change or an elective chosen late
  • admission or re-registration completed close to the deadline
  • incomplete addresses that the postal service cannot deliver

If you chose e-material instead of printed books

IGNOU gives students the option of e-material at admission. According to MPDD, students who opt for e-material receive a 15% discount on the programme fee, as a way of encouraging e-learning. If you chose this option, study from the digital material rather than waiting for a parcel.

Every student, whichever option they chose, can download the same course units free from eGyanKosh. Our eGyanKosh guide explains how to find any course by its code.

Study while you wait

Assignment and exam deadlines do not move because books are late, so do not wait for the parcel to start:

  • Download the units for your courses from eGyanKosh and start with the ones your assignments cover.
  • Download this session’s assignment questions from IGNOU’s web services page, so you know which units to read first.
  • If you prefer printed books for a course, the university publishes a Study Material Price Catalogue on its website.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to check IGNOU book status?

Only your enrolment number and the right session link. No password or date of birth is asked on the official MPDD page.

Which website shows the official IGNOU study material status?

IGNOU’s website lists it under Student Services › Know Your Status › Study Material Status. The individual session pages open on gradecard.ignou.ac.in.

I re-registered. Which session should I check?

Check the session you re-registered for. Books for your next semester or year are dispatched against that cycle.

Whom do I contact if my books have not arrived?

MPDD’s student support cell: 011-29572008 or 011-29572012, or mpdd@ignou.ac.in. If that does not resolve it, register a grievance on iGRAM (igram.ignou.ac.in).

Can I study without the printed books?

Yes. The same course units are free on eGyanKosh, and students who chose e-material at admission study from digital material with a 15% fee discount.

My address has changed. Will my books still reach me?

Parcels go to the address in IGNOU’s records. Update your address with the university as early as possible and mention the change when you contact MPDD about a missing parcel.

Can I buy IGNOU books separately?

IGNOU publishes a Study Material Price Catalogue on its website, linked from the Student Services menu.
