What Are the Rules for IGNOU Simultaneous Admission?

Maximum two academic programmes at a time in permissible cases is allowed for a learner by IGNOU.

The present rules clearly cover the following situations:

• One regular, ODL or online programme from other institutions and one eligible ODL or online UG or PG programme from IGNOU.
• Two eligible undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes in ODL mode from IGNOU, taken in different admission cycles
• Two eligible online UG or PG degree programmes of IGNOU, normally in different admission cycles
• One eligible ODL Degree and One eligible online Degree from IGNOU in different admission cycles
• A six month certificate programme and one other IGNOU programme. IGNOU also says that simultaneous admission is not allowed for programmes regulated by certain professional regulatory bodies until the concerned regulator permits it. Collaborative programmes may be excluded too.

Is it Clearly Permissible to go for Master’s Degree and PG Diploma together?

Not always. The notification for simultaneous programme specifically mentions the rules for two UG or PG degree programmes. It talks of a six-month certificate programme with another programme separate.

A postgraduate diploma is an independent academic award but is not a postgraduate degree. He added that the students should not assume that the permission for two PG programmes includes all PG diplomas.

Instead of merely asking whether master’s degrees and diplomas are allowed, mention for example:

• First programme name and code
• 2nd programme name and code
• Mode of every programme
• Admission cycle of the first programme
• Suggested admission cycle of the second programme

A written reply is more reliable than an unofficial website, video or verbal reassurance.

Eligibility Check for Both Programmes

Where simultaneous registration is permitted, you will need to meet the entry requirements of both programmes separately.

A project, dissertation, internship, practical file or fieldwork report may be a part of a PG degree or diploma.

What if the two programmes have common courses?

IGNOU says that in case of simultaneous undertaking of degree programmes, if there are any common courses in those degree programmes, the credits of those common courses will be counted towards only one programme.

For the other programme, the learner may have to take other courses. This stops the same credits from being used twice to obtain two academic awards.
